California’s native tree, the Bigleaf Maple (acer macrophyllum, for you etymology nuts) inspired Anchor to create a beer as big and bold as the tree’s foot-wide leaves in the throws of autumn. This red ale has a hint of maple syrup–including that from its namesake tree–that complement but don’t overwhelm the flavorful malts. It’s balanced by light, earthy hops and has a bright amber color that goes along great with the fall foliage. This deep-flavored brew is just sweet and warming enough for these mid-autumn days, at 6% ABV.

Magic Hat’s Séance is a late seasonal saison that is much darker and more complex than much of the rest of the style. It has an earthy and sweet aroma that matches the deep complexion of the brew. The flavor has some char to it, as well as malt, unsweetened chocolate and dark fruit, with a grainy finish. Definitely an unconventional saison, somewhere between the typically spring/summer style and something more in line with fall. This 4.4% ABV beer is great for the the eerie first nights of autumn.
