Anchor BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red

Thursday, October 24, 2013 | Anchor, Fall, Featured Beer

California’s native tree, the Bigleaf Maple (acer macrophyllum, for you etymology nuts) inspired Anchor to create a beer as big and bold as the tree’s foot-wide leaves in the throws of autumn. This red ale has a hint of maple syrup–including that from its namesake tree–that complement but don’t overwhelm the flavorful malts. It’s balanced by light, earthy hops and has a bright amber color that goes along great with the fall foliage. This deep-flavored brew is just sweet and warming enough for these mid-autumn days, at 6% ABV.

The flavor starts fruity, with traces of apricot, grapefruit, and pine, with a little maltiness to follow, and a floral aftertaste. The 8.7% ABV beer has a medium body, just the right amount of carbonation and a somewhat dry finish. It’s made with Chinook, Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe hops to create a greatly aromatic brew with a pleasantly bitter flavor.

The flavor has some char to it, as well as malt, unsweetened chocolate and dark fruit, with a grainy finish. Definitely an unconventional saison, somewhere between the typically spring/summer style and something more in line with fall. This 4.4% ABV beer is great for the the eerie first nights of autumn.
