Find the Golden Tickets

Friday, April 19, 2013 | Beer News, Contest, Events, Victory

The search is still on for two Golden Tickets, each awarding one lucky person a VIP invitation to the Philly Beer Scene Awards, being held May 22nd, as well as a private tour of Victory’s brewery in Downingtown, PA.

The two tickets were hidden inside two loose-packed cases of Victory Headwaters Pale Ale, now sitting on the shelf somewhere at a local distributor*. Victory doesn’t open its doors for public tours anymore due to a high demand for their brew, so this is a great opportunity to go see how some of your favorite beers are made.

The Philly Beer Scene Awards Ceremony, being held at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, is a black tie event honoring the best of beer culture in the Philadelphia area. Awards will be announced for categories such as Brewery of the Year, Brewmaster of the Year, Best Bar in Philadelphia, Best Distributor in the Suburbs, Best Beer Event and many more. Voting is open to the public, so go share your opinion now. Voting ends Tuesday, April 30.

Each VIP pass gives you and a guest of your access to the VIP tables at the front of the event, allowing you to mingle with your favorite local brewers, beer writers, bar owners and other personalities within the scene. Both ticket finders will also get to present an award on stage with Bill Covaleski, AND Philly Beer Scene will be picking up your tab** at the end of the night.

If you aren’t liking the odds of finding a ticket, don’t worry. There are a limited number of tickets available to the public, and if you act quick, you might be able to snag one.

*The cases are somewhere within Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Philadelphia and Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania.

**Beer only.

Victory Swing Session Saison

Wednesday, April 10, 2013 | Victory

This Saison from Victory is just what you need to get in the right mood for this warmer weather. Pouring a hazy yellow-gold, Swing Session greets you with a crisp citrus and yeasty scent and large head. The taste is slightly fruity, spicy and somewhat tart, the strongest flavors being coriander, citrus and clove. It also has earthy, grassy hop notes, making for an overall tangy, zesty experience. Although it is very spicy, it’s not overwhelming. Weighing in a 4.5% ABV, this saison is true to its name.

Spring Beer Suggestions

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 | Anchor, Ithaca, Long Trail, Starr Hill Brewery, Uncategorized, Victory

Spring is in the air! (Although you wouldn’t know it with this kind of weather.) And that means there’s a shift away from the winter beers we’ve been enjoying for the last three months and bocks, saisons and pale ales are coming into season. If you aren’t sure what to try this spring, we have a few suggestions.

Swing Session Saison – Victory

A light straw-colored session Saison from our local pals at Victory, this beer has citrus, fruit and grain aromas, with some spicy notes as well. The flavor holds orange and lemon zest, and the spiciness in the smell turns to cloves, herbal hops and pepper. Its crisp and nicely carbonated mouthfeel pairs well with mussels and the warmer days coming ahead. 4.5% AVB

Starr Saison – Starr Hill

This golden beer has sweet and spicy aromas of ginger, clove, and fruit. The flavor is reminiscent of bubblegum, honey, candied fruits and has some grassy bitterness with a somewhat dry finish that allows a bit of bitterness to linger. Its crisp carbonation and light body make it a great beer to grab for sitting on the porch in the sun. 6.5% ABV

Pollenator – Long Trail

Pollenator is a full-bodied spring ale of clear orange hue and an earthy malt aroma. Its flavor starts with a springy grass taste, followed by malt and citrus hops. With its crisp carbonation and light body, it’s easy to drink and pairs well with chicken, salads and spicy foods, making it great for picnics. 4.6% ABV

Ground Break – Ithaca

Another saison, but this time with more hops. The fruity smell speaks of sour grape, wet grass and malty wheat, while the taste holds wheat, orange-y citrus and herbal notes. There are also hints of spicy clove. It pairs well with grilled meat or fish, which means it’s a good choice for those fishing trips you’ve been looking forward to all winter. 6.0% ABV

Anchor Bock – Anchor

This rich, dark bock has a light aroma of cocoa powder, bread and faintly of citrus zest. Its flavor is malty, citrus hoppy, and continues the cocoa theme from the scent. Its body is thick and creamy with light carbonation. This beer is a great stepping stone from the darker beers of winter. 5.5% ABV

Winter Warmers

Thursday, January 10, 2013 | Anchor, Fuller's, Goose Island, Moa, Victory

Well, it may be a warm week in the Philadelphia region but it’s still winter and a good time for a soul-warming brew. Winter Warmers is a common seasonal variety of beer that tends to be malty and sweet, but most importantly on the higher scale of ABV. Many English varieties contain little additional spicing, but many brewers kick up the spice making it fall under the wassail category of beer. And if drinking many of the local craft varieties, you will of course find a defined characteristic of hops in most.

So, to celebrate the warm winter week, here’s a selection of winter warmers that will be sure to please:

  • Victory V-12 – The heftiest beer of our list, the V-12 ranges over 12% ABV (hence the name). Filled with fruity flavors, including notes of pear and apricot, the beer finishes with a wonderful dryness.
  • Goose Island Pere Jacques – If Belgian styles are what you go for, the Pere Jacques is an amazing selection which follows the tradition of a Dubbel. The beer is wonderfully fruity and malty with a nice bite at 8% ABV. This beer is great with dinners and also makes a fine selection for dessert pairings.
  • Fuller’s Vintage Ale – Considered throughout the world as one of the best beers brewed, the annual release from Fuller’s is a small batch beer with robust malt characteristics weighing in at 8.5% ABV.
  • Moa Imperial Stout – If you want something a bit more robust and dark, look no further. This rare selection from New Zealand is a high ABV rich and dark beer with characteristics of mocha and coffee. It is finished in an oak Pinot Noir barrel which gives it some subtle sweetness to offset the richness of the malts.
  • Anchor Old Foghorn – This immense barleywine is big, malty, and sweet! After brewing, the beer is dry-hopped and cellared so that it can achieve a perfect balance. The end result is a perfect dessert beer with awesome notes of hops and fruitiness.

Victory Red Thunder

Thursday, November 1, 2012 | Breweries, Victory

What is the Red Thunder you ask? The Red Thunder is a new, limited edition version of Victory’s incredible popular Baltic Thunder. The twist is that the folks at Victory aged this beer in red wine barrels to create a new and even more complex beer. Best of all, this should be released just in time for Thanksgiving, on November 21st. Check out the video below featuring Bill and Ron from Victory sampling the new creation.

Recovering from Sandy

Thursday, November 1, 2012 | Frankenmuth, Long Trail, Shock Top, Victory

At the Greatest Beers of the World, we first want to extend our best wishes to you and your families if you’re recovering from Sandy’s impact on the region.

The lights are coming back on. The streets are being cleared. And surely, if your family missed out on the Halloween festivities, they’re being rescheduled for next week. And what’s a great way to give yourself a little mental R&R this weekend as you get back into the normal swing of things. Have a beer of course!

Here’s four exceptional beer offerings that is appropriate for the recovery effort!

Long Trail Survival Packs – The Winter Survival Pack is the perfect 12-pack featuring Long Trail’s year-round favorites, Long Tail Ale and IPA along with winter seasonals, Hit the Trail and Hibernator. The Hit The Trail is a sessionable 4.2% ABV English style brown ale. The Hibernator on the other hand is a more robust Scottish ale with a bit of warmth at 6% ABV.

Frankenmuth – A great fit for surviving the “Frankenstorm”, Frankenmuth offers some incredible German style beers from “Michigan’s Little Bavaria.” Be on the lookout for their Pilsener which is a traditional golden lager which adheres to German purity laws. It is light, crisp, and refreshing with a dry finish.

Victory Storm King – A local favorite, the Storm King is an intense 9.1% ABV Russian imperial stout that is rich and full bodied.  With an extremely dark pour, you’ll notice immediately a dense aroma of chocolate, booze, and roasted malts. The complex flavors range from bitters to more of a chocolate and coffee like characteristic.

Shock Top End of the World Midnight Wheat – This 6% ABV wheat beer has a deep amber color with complex spicy characteristics you’d expect to find from Belgian style wheat beers. This is offset by the light chocolate malts giving it subtle richness. Overall, a great wheat for transitioning to the cooler climate.

Are you looking for something frightfully different for Halloween, try a Dark Devil. Do a 50/50 blend of 2 Victory favorites, Storm King Stout and Hop Devil IPA.
