This week, as we celebrated our nation’s independence and history, the Greatest Beers of the World would like to invite everyone of our followers up to Yardley, PA, located in Bucks County. There in the center of the Historic District sits a 166 year old tavern known simply as “The Continental” to locals.

The Continental got its start in 1845 when a farmer from Upper Makefield named Samuel Slack opened (somewhat ironically) a Temperance house, as well as a convenience store. Slack was also the town’s librarian, and built a functioning library above the store. During the Civil War, the building itself acted as a “station” in the Underground Railroad, no doubt due to Samuel Slack’s pension for morality and temperance.

“On July 4th, 1860, Samuel Slack applied for and was granted a license to operate a tavern and boarding house under the name ‘Yardleyville Hotel.” Six years later, Slack’s son, Aaron, was honorably discharged from the 186th Regiment and came home to take over the family business at the young age of 23. He changed the name to “The Continental Hotel.” It was under Aaron’s care that the Continental became a popular stopping place where visitors and Yardley natives alike could relax and enjoy the beautiful countryside.

Today, the Vliet and Lyons families are helping to restore the Continental to its original grace by “restoring the outdoor porch, the Victorian façade, and reconstructing the second floor library.” Their motivation is to give Yardley natives a beautiful place to eat, drink and be merry with family and friends. As for their food, they are known to have the best burgers in Bucks County! We recommend getting the Continental Burger: 100% Angus beef topped with sauteed Shitake mushrooms, caramelized onions and Swiss cheese, with a side of Sweet Potato fries. They have the right beer to pair with it as well: Rogue Dead Guy Ale on draft! The sweetness of the onions and fries marry perfectly with the honeyish malt notes in the beer. They have 9 different drafts and a wide selection of 40 bottles!

So, if you are a history-loving, patriotic beer lover, you will not want to miss this landmark of Yardley!
